What is the purpose of an education?

How do you define the word "education?" What is the purpose of an "education?"

charlesperalo December 24th @ 5:33 pm

Well education is learning and the purpose is whatever you want to do with it.

The purpose of an education is to give people the knowledge/skills necessary to pursue their passions and dreams, something that many K-12 schools barely do anymore. Schools don't teach current information or relevant/important life skills anymore, that needs to change.

Bump. This thread has the potential to be epic considering who is on this site and their backgrounds. It's a question I've been thinking a lot about lately too (being in college spending a fuck ton of money to be "educated". Someone kick Dale and tell him to answer this ; )

Education is the acquisition of knowledge. It can come in many different forms, not just at a traditional institution such as school.

In my opinion, the purpose of an education is to aid in the advancement of your life. However, what is considered "advancing" is subjective and unique to every person. For some, advancing in life is done by acquiring wealth, for others it may be creating innovative tools to improve the lives of others, and for some it may be just achieving the title "Dr." in front of their name.

Different forms of education are needed for different goals. For example, medical school is absolutely necessary for aspiring surgeons/doctors, where as an individual can become an entrepreneur with just trial and error experiences, although attending college gives a big advantage, it is not absolutely necessary as in the former scenario.
